Derry City remain third in the Premier Division table thanks to a comfortable win over Galway United at the Brandywell on Sunday.

Patrick McEleney controlled the ball well and slotted the ball beneath the goalkeeper in the 17th minute.

Daniel Lafferty added the second in the 35th minute and Eamon Zayed scored from the penalty spot on 80 minutes after Stephen Walsh handled inside the area.

Mark Farren marked his return by backheeling in the fourth late on.

David McDaid spurned the first chance of the game when his shot hit the inside of the post after a good ball by Stephen McLaughlin.

Ruairi Harkin provided the pass for McEleney to score the opener.

Zayed and McLaughlin had further chances before Lafferty got on the end of a corner to make it 2-0.

Kevin Deery twice headed over the bar before Zayed found the net with his penalty 10 minutes from time.

Farren shot straight at the keeper in the final minute but made amends by slipping home a delicate backheel at the end.

Derry now trail Sligo Rovers by a point and Shamrock Rovers by four points going into the final two rounds of matches.

The Candystripes travel to Inchicore to take on St Patrick's Athletic on Friday night.
