Southport safety almost secured, says boss Liam Watson
Southport manager Liam Watson believes his side are close to safety in the Blue Square Bet Premier, less than three months into the season.
The Sandgrounders have won eight of their last 11 games and are seventh, just outside the play-offs.
"If you put it into perspective, we need four wins to be safe," Watson told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"For a part-time club to be safe by Christmas at this level would be an unbelievable achievement."
Southport's solitary defeat in this run of fixtures was the shock 4-0 reverse against Braintree in September.
A 3-1 victory at Mansfield on Saturday gave Port their fifth back-to-back away win, and Watson believes his side cannot be underestimated by any team.
"We keep on surprising and we're never favourites to win anywhere," Watson continued. "But that's our fifth away win on the run.
"We scored three at Mansfield, Darlington, Forest Green and Newport, and also two at Bath. So we've five away wins on the spin and scored 14 goals, so I don't know why anyone doesn't fancy us to win anywhere.
"But we're just happy to be the underdog and we'll just keep working hard."
