Crewe Alexandra will not pursue their interest in defender Richard Hinds, who has been on trial with the League Two club twice in the last two months.
The former Sheffield Wednesday player, 31, featured in a reserve match for the Alex against Everton on Tuesday.
"I don't think he's going to play in preference to what we've got," Crewe boss Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke.
Meanwhile, teenage striker Max Clayton has been ruled out for up to three weeks with a hamstring injury.
"It didn't seem to be too much at the time but it will be enough to keep him out for two or three weeks," said Gradi.
"Max hasn't played as well as he would like, but I think he feels he's getting closer to it all the time.
"The goal he scored against Macclesfield [in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy] was a terrific goal in it's own way and that's what he can do."
