Preston lost ground on the play-off pack after a disappointing home defeat by Bournemouth.
The Lilywhites took the lead when Juvhel Tsoumou finished sharply from close range.
Wes Thomas put the Cherries on level terms after latching on to Marc Pugh's through ball.
Scott Malone scored at the second attempt to put the visitors in front before Pugh capitalised on a defensive mix-up to put some gloss on the result.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Bournemouth manager Lee Bradbury told BBC Radio Solent:
"The first half we were a little off it. After half time we came out and gave it a really good go and the lads started believing in themselves more. I thought they were phenomenal today.
"The 4-4-1-1 or sometimes the 4-1-4-1 formation has worked well away from home for us, with someone in the hole. We need to take this now and grow in confidence for our home form.
"It gives me some dilemma of how to play at home. I want the lads to play freely though, even play 4-4-2 at home, and if we can start getting results at home then obviously I'll stick to that."
