Tranmere Rovers captain John Welsh believes his side are in the League One play-off chase on merit.

Rovers are in sixth place, nine points behind top-of-the-table Charlton Athletic, following a five-match unbeaten run.

"Since the start of the season, performance-wise, we've been spot on," Welsh told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"The season has gone really well, the lads are playing some really good stuff and we deserve to be up there."

The 27-year-old midfielder believes Tranmere are now capable of grinding out results and he is hopeful their three-game winning streak will continue at Scunthorpe United.

"I don't think we played really well against Hartlepool but coming off the pitch with three points and a clean sheet, there's no better feeling," said Welsh.

"The place is buzzing and we're just going to take each game as it comes but it's brilliant at the moment.

"We're concentrating on Saturday and going to Scunthorpe and trying to get something there."
