Sam Saunders' goal ensured Brentford overcame Blue Square Bet South side Basingstoke in a nervy tie to reach the second round of the FA Cup.
Saunders fired the hosts in front early on with a 25-yard direct free-kick after being fouled by Nathan Smart.
Leon Legge saved the Bees from facing a replay by clearing the ball off the line after a scramble in the area.
Matt Warner also went close for the visitors but his low drive was well saved by Richard Lee.
Brentford had lost skipper Kevin O'Connor just before half-time when he was carried off on a stretcher with his leg in a brace.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Brentford manager Uwe Rosler told BBC London 94.9:
"I didn't enjoy the second half and especially the last 10 minutes.
"You have to be prepared in every game you go into to earn the right to play.
"We could see that Basingstoke were up for it in the first five minutes."
