Port Vale ended Torquay's five-match winning run as the two sides played out a goalless draw at Vale Park.
Billy Bodin caused problems for the Vale defence before Tom Pope's 10-yard volley was brilliantly saved by Gulls keeper Robert Olejnik.
Pope went close again after the break with a header as Micky Adams' team looked a much better side to the one that lost to Grimsby in the FA Cup.
Vale substitute Sean Rigg saw a volley headed off the line by Kevin Nicholson.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Port Vale boss Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke:
"I don't know what else we could have done in the game really to force a goal.
"I thought we started a bit nervously but that's to be expected because we've had a lot of kicks in the teeth recently.
"I thought the team needed freshening up, so I brought two new faces into the starting 11, and I thought both contributed something to the game."
