Preston striker Neil Mellor hopes North End's 1-0 win at Hartlepool could provide the spark for a climb towards the play-off places.
The 29-year-old scored the only goal in Tuesday night's victory, the team's first in ten league games.
"It's been a while since we've won in the league and it's a great feeling," Mellor told BBC Radio Lancashire.
"It was great for the team to get back to winning ways. We can start looking towards the top six."
He said: "I've only ever looked at the top half of the table because that's where we want to finish this season."
The League One side had lost eight of previous last nine league games, having previously enjoyed a seven-game winning run.
"Strikers want to score but the most important thing was the three points - it was vital," added Mellor
"So many times we've come off the pitch and thought how have we lost that game.
