Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has been ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury he picked up in the 1-0 defeat by Manchester United.

Given, 35, suffered a small tear in his left hamstring just before the break.

Villa manager Alex McLeish said: "It is disappointing to lose Shay in such circumstances but, unfortunately, these things happen in football."

Midfielder Jermaine Jenas suffered an Achilles injury against United with the club still waiting on his scan results.

Republic of Ireland stopper Given had played in all Villa's Premier League matches since his move to Villa from Manchester City in the summer for an undisclosed fee.

American Brad Guzan, who replaced Given seven minutes before half-time against United, will continue to deputise.

McLeish added: "We have to meet these challenges and we will.

"We have total faith in Brad who, as I said after the game against United on Saturday, can be proud of the way he stepped in when Shay had to come off.

"We will need within the football club for everybody to stick together and that strength of unity will help massively."
