Striker Nile Ranger has returned to Newcastle after an ankle injury cut short his loan spell at Barnsley.
The 20-year-old moved to Oakwell on an emergency deal until 14 January and started three matches for the Tykes.
However, Barnsley manager Keith Hill is confident of extending midfielder Danny Drinkwater's loan from Manchester United until the end of the season.
Hill told BBC Radio Sheffield: "We're very hopeful, but we won't bag it until it's signed, sealed and delivered."
"He's happy, he's playing, he's educating himself," added Hill.
"It's important for him to play, to improve, to get experience for the next phase of his career and I don't think there's any better place for him to do that."
