Defender John McCombe has said he had no intention of leaving Port Vale, even when he was left out of the team.
The 26-year-old, who was voted last season's player of the year, has found himself out of favour at various points of the season.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "The manager spoke to me about going out on loan but I was always going to stay here and fight for my place."
McCombe made his 150th appearance for Vale at former club Hereford on Monday.
He is now playing regularly and has been part of the team that has picked up 10 points from the last 12 available in League Two.
"I love playing for the Vale and I want to be here longer if I can," McCombe added.
"It hurt me when I was dropped but I have kept going and now my hard work is being rewarded.
"I feel we have a strong squad and, as a group of players, we are determined to be in the race for promotion in 2012."
