Southend United have taken Ipswich Town full-back Shane O'Connor on trial, with the view of completing a longer deal.
The 21-year-old Irishman has just returned from a loan spell with the Shrimpers' League Two rivals Port Vale, where he failed to make an appearance.
And he has not played a senior game since January last year, coming off the bench in Town's 3-0 League Cup second leg semi-final defeat by Arsenal.
O'Connor has featured 22 times for Ipswich since debuting in 2009.
The left-back, who can also operate in midfield, is a product of the Liverpool academy and is capped at under-21 level for the Republic of Ireland.
His contract is set to expire in the summer, having signed a two-year deal in July 2010.
