Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson's future at the club is unclear after he told manager Paulo Sergio that he would not return to Tynecastle.
The 27-year-old took a self-imposed leave of absence over his continued frustrations with the wage delays.
He was expected to return after this week's payment of December wages, but appears to have changed his mind.
"He said 'No, I'm not going to return'. I'm very confused at the moment about this problem," Sergio said.
"The last few days it seemed that things would change. He texted me saying he wanted to come back," the Hearts boss added.
"But yesterday things changed again. Personally, and with the team, Ryan Stevenson doesn't have any problem.
"But I think he has to explain himself to the board and to the club's directors.
"I don't know what's going to happen in the future."
