Reading have signed Republic of Ireland Under-21 striker Karl Sheppard from Shamrock Rovers on a free transfer.
The 20-year-old confirmed the deal via his page on Twitter.
"Just signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Reading, delighted to finally get it done," said Sheppard.
Sheppard, who scored 10 goals in 24 appearances as Shamrock Rovers won the League of Ireland this season was also being tracked by Blackpool and Cardiff City.
"He can hold the ball up, he's young and he's hungry," McDermott told BBC Radio Berkshire.
"He's already been over here and was at Everton but it didn't work out and for some reason, sometimes that happens.
"He's a good age, and he's mature and he is ready."
