Port Vale striker Tom Pope has called on fans to unite behind the team rather than engage in internet gossip.

The Valiants are struggling against off-field financial concerns that have left boss Micky Adams unable to add to the squad.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I've had 40-50 phone calls asking me about what's happened at the club. Fans should be getting behind the side.

"I'm getting 30 texts because of some idiot on a computer."

Pope, 26, who is a boyhood Vale fan, should recover from a groin problem for Saturday's visit of AFC Wimbledon to keep his place in an injury-hit team.

The former Crewe and Rotherham striker has started every League Two fixture for the Valiants this season and is backing the team to recover from three successive defeats.

That run has seen the Vale Park side drop six points adrift of the play-offs.

"If we can go on a eight or nine-game unbeaten run then we'll be back around the play-off area. It's always better to go on a run in the second half of the season," he continued.
