Colchester 1-2 Chesterfield

Bottom-of-the-table Chesterfield overcame Colchester United to secure their first victory in League One since 17 September.

Jack Lester headed in Liam Ridehalgh's cross to give the Spireites the lead.

Steven Gillespie then levelled for Colchester, driving a precise, low shot past Tommy Lee.

But the visitors secured their winner just before half-time when Josh Thompson headed Ridehalgh's free-kick past U's keeper Ben Williams.

Colchester manager John Ward told BBC Essex:

"As that second half went on and we couldn't find that opening, we lost the belief in us that we could win it and could get it back.

"Then we have that really good opportunity with Ian (Henderson) and he takes it a little quickly, which summed up the second half for us.

"We got a bit anxious with things and I thought he did with that opportunity. We lost it in both boxes. They were far more dangerous at set-plays than we were."

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan tells BBC Radio Sheffield:

"Obviously we're delighted with the three points. I think we've worked really hard and scored two great goals and we've had good opportunities possibly to score one or two more.

"It's a tough place to come. I think they're a really good footballing side and they move you around and I thought we kept them quiet for most of the game.

"They had a little period where they were putting us under pressure, but other than that I was really pleased with how we went about our job. I think it was very professional job and full credit to the players."
