Matty Taylor's audacious backheel for Forest Green knocked Wrexham off the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier.
Taylor made the most of James Norwood's low driven pass to send visiting goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi the wrong way three minutes after the break.
Wrexham had a last-minute chance to level when player-manager Andy Morrell was brought down in the penalty area.
But former Wrexham keeper Sam Russell's trailing legs denied Dean Keates's shot from the spot.
Fleetwood climbed above Wrexham courtesy of their 3-1 win over Braintree.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Forest Green Rovers manager Dave Hockaday told BBC Gloucestershire:
"We want more nights like this because it was a fantastic performance and we just about deserved it.
"If you let good teams play they'll rip you apart, so we played a brave game and a high, really high press. Both keepers pulled off some great saves and we had a bit of luck, but we had more chances than them.
"A second goal would have killed it but hey, we hung on and everyone did their job tonight."
