Niger starlet Tidjani Amadou Moutari Kalala's Africa Cup of Nations campaign has been cut short after breaking his leg in Monday's 2-0 defeat by Gabon.

The teenager, who only turned 18 last week, came on as a 63rd-minute substitute only to be stretchered off six minutes later.

Gabon's Stephane Nguema was booked for the reckless nature of his challenge.

Kalala, attached to French club Le Mans, is being flown to Paris to undergo surgery, said the Niger camp.

This is expected to take place on Thursday.

The teenager initially attempted to play on following the foul but was eventually carried off, so leaving Niger, who had already made three substitutions, to play the last quarter of an hour with just 10 men.

Before leaving Gabon, the teenager was visited by Nguema and Gabon team-mate Bruno Magna at the Niger hotel - with the Panthers players keen to apologise for Kalala's early exit.

Making their Nations Cup debut, Niger face Tunisia on Friday before meeting Morocco in their final Group C game on 31 January.
