Lee Minshull's goal saw Newport County move out of the Blue Square Bet Premier relegation zone as they saw off fellow strugglers Bath City at Spytty Park.
Ryan Charles' left-wing cross found Minshull, who then fired in from close range early on.
Charles had two good chances to extend Newport's lead before Glyn Thompson and Chris Shephard went close for City.
Newport dominated after the break before Paul Stonehouse fired over for Bath late on.
Victory allowed Justin Edinburgh's side to move above of the relegation zone.
But defeat plunged Bath further into trouble at the bottom of the Blue Square Bet Premier with only three wins to date.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Bath City manager Adie Britton told BBC Radio Bristol:
"It's the same position we've been in for quite some time - getting in great positions in the final third but not enough quality to take the opportunities.
"We gave away the goal with a poor header. There's been numerous goals this season where we should have defended better.
"I think Sean Canham would have made the difference along with Gethin Jones.
"I felt with Sean in the game we would have caused all sorts of problems."
