Oldham 1-0 Tranmere

Shefki Kuqi's second-half penalty secured Oldham Athletic victory over Tranmere Rovers.

The hosts went close through James Tarkowski's long-range shot and at the other end John Welsh and James Wallace had headers saved by Alex Cisak.

Welsh brought down Robbie Simpson and Kuqi drove his spot-kick high into the right-hand corner.

Filipe Morais hit a post for Oldham as Tranmere, who have now won only once in their last 17, offered little in reply.

The visitors, whose supporters called for manager Les Parry to be sacked, are now only two points clear of the League One relegation zone .

Oldham Athletic manager Paul Dickov told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I've said it too many times before, but we do get a reaction off the players once we've had a bad defeat.

"I thought they went out there today and worked their socks off, they were disciplined and it was a good professional performance by us.

"Without us being at our best I felt we were comfortable winners.

"His (Shefki Kuqi) goals are a plus, that's 14 this year, but he offers us so much more and he's a leader for us."

Tranmere manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"The difference in this division is always a mistake, a refereeing decision and today it was a very cheap penalty.

"To be fair to the lads they're trying to make something happen, instead of keeping calm [in front of goal].

"Our next five games are important to us because we're playing teams in and around us.

"Oldham have gone four points clear of us, but if we can get something next week we can pull that back and keep a gap between us and Chesterfield."
