Glentoran boss Eddie Patterson started his reign with a Premiership victory over 10-man Donegal Celtic.

Kevin Keegan was sent-off on 18 minutes for handling on the goal-line and Richard Gibson netted the rebound after Robert Robinson saved his penalty.

Gibson wasted an good chance before the break while the hosts created second-half openings, with Ryan Henderson and Eamon McAllister going close.

Johnny Harkness almost equalised when his 25-yard free-kick hit a post.

Donegal Celtic made a bright start with Paul McVeigh diverting a Keegan shot wide.

Keegan handled from a Colin Nixon header and Robinson did well to push Gibson's spot-kick onto a post but the striker was well placed to net the rebound.

Gibson should have scored again two minutes from half-time but sent his close-range header wide.

Donegal Celtic came out strongly after the restart and Henderson cut inside before firing straight at keeper Elliott Morris.

Robinson tipped a Gibson free-kick over before McAllister's half-volley was kept out by Morris.

Morris was beaten as Harkness saw his 76th minute free-kick strike the woodwork.

Glentoran held on for a win which takes the east Belfast side up to fifth place.
