Gateshead closed the gap on the play-off places to four points with victory against Hayes and Yeading.
The hosts, who went into the game with went ahead through Kris Gate's near-post header from James Marwood's corner.
Hayes midfielder Freddie Warren was sent off for violent conduct only 11 minutes after stepping off the bench.
And Jon Shaw, who had earlier hit a post, then scored his 26th goal of the season with a left-footed drive.
