Newcastle United clean up at city sports awards night

Newcastle United enjoyed an evening of success at the Sport Newcastle awards, with manager Alan Pardew winning the Sports Personality of the Year honour.

Pardew, 50, has guided the Magpies into contention for European football in the Premier League this season, winning 12 of 27 top flight games.

Goalkeeper Steve Harper won the Wilkinson Sword for his work with the club's community programmes.

Defender Remie Streete won the 'Wor Jackie' award for young talent.

United academy striker Alex Gilliead was the recipient of the Jack Hixon Trophy, presented by Alan Shearer, and the NUFC Foundation won the Team/Community award.

Other winners included BBL Cup winners Newcastle Eagles, who picked up the Frank Brennan Trophy.

John Harrison who collected the Stan Calvert award for coaching, while England under-18 rugby union scrum-half Caity Mattinson was honoured with the Young Sports Star North East prize.
