Hereford were dragged into the League Two relegation zone thanks to Marc Richards' late header for Port Vale.
The hosts almost went ahead when Chris Shuker's shot was saved by David Cornell before Louis Dodds' follow-up was headed off the line by Ryan Green.
The Bulls' Joe Colbeck stung the palms of keeper Stuart Tomlinson, while Sam Clucas was also denied by the keeper.
But it was Richards who had the final say when he buried a header from Tom Pope's right-wing cross.
