Derry City had Barry Molloy sent-off as they fell to their second defeat of the Premier Division campaign at Drogheda.
Ryan Brennan ran through to shoot past City keeper Gerard Doherty for the opener in the 22nd minute.
Molloy, who had been booked in the first half, got his second yellow 15 minutes from time for bringing down Brennan as he was moving in on goal.
Brian Gannon netted United's second in the 88th minute and, apart from Molloy, five other Derry players were booked.
