Grimsby missed an opportunity to put pressure on the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off chasers after a goalless draw at relegation-threatened Darlington.
Andi Thanoj's strike from the edge of the area was tipped around the post by home keeper Jordan Pickford.
Adam Rundle twice tested keeper James McKeown from outside the box for the Quakers, while Kris Taylor hit the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick.
Liam Hearn's late effort for the Mariners was blocked by Haydn Hollis.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Grimsby Town joint-manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:
"I don't get that feeling from the players that they believe that the chance was still there (to make the play-offs) and that's frustrating.
"You know you get strange results and today a lot have gone the way that we would have liked so to not get three points is another kick in the teeth.
"I don't want to see the season peter out and now it's about a bit of personal pride for some to go and show how much it means to us."
