Gateshead kept alive their faint hope of sealing a Blue Square Bet Premier play-off place after their narrow victory over Forest Green Rovers.
The result means Gateshead are four points behind fifth-placed York with three games to play.
Jamie Collins had a great chance to put Forest Green ahead at the break but glanced his header over the bar.
Shaw put Gateshead ahead after rising to head home Alan O'Brien's cross while Keiron Forbes also went close late on.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Forest Green Manager Dave Hockaday told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"We've dominated possession for long spells and I'm happy with that. It's about winning games and we didn't have enough end product.
"I just felt we could have scored at any time and we could have gone on and won the game, but we haven't had the quality.
"We had one or two half chances and Matt Taylor's had a good effort at the beginning of the second half.
"But it's been a good season and we're going to end up with 50% more points than we had last season, which is a massive improvement."
