Chris Holroyd's header earned Preston a draw at Oldham.
Robbie Simpson should have put the Latics ahead but he blazed his shot wide, while down the other end Holroyd and Craig Morgan both spurned chances.
Simpson made amends in the second half, nodding home Filipe Morais' cross from close range to give the hosts the lead.
But North End snatched a point when Danny Mayor chipped in a pinpoint cross from the left and Holroyd simply headed in from two yards out.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Preston manager Graham Westley told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"I didn't enjoy the game at all because it was a difficult surface to play on.
"When you see a player of Shefki Kuqi's quality over-run something the way he did, you realise just how poor the surface was.
"There were a lot of very good players on show who found it hard to make a telling contribution.
"To go behind and show the desire to get back into it, get a equaliser and then very nearly win it at the end was a positive."
