Another tournament, another penalty shoot-out defeat. And so it goes on...
England head home from Euro 2012 with plenty to reflect on ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, which starts in September against Moldova and then Ukraine.
Italy were deserved winners - but give England some credit for hanging on until the very last kick of the evening.
JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) - 7
Guy's view: Couldn't stop any of the excellent Italian penalties but his performance in general was as assured as it always is. A future captain in the mould of Buffon & Casillas.
GLEN JOHNSON (RIGHT-BACK) - 7
Guy's view: Defensively sound - something that hasn't always been said about the Liverpool right-back. A shame he couldn't quite dig the ball out to put England in front with their first, rare chance to score.
JOHN TERRY (CENTRAL DEFENCE) - 7
Guy's view: Block after block after block. I'd make him England's man of the match in this one. Makes up for lack of pace with his reading of the game.
JOLEON LESCOTT (CENTRAL DEFENCE) - 6
Guy's view: Not quite as commanding a presence as Terry, but stayed concentrated in the face of constant Italy pressure. I wonder if he'll now take over as first choice left-sided centre-back?
ASHLEY COLE (LEFT-BACK) - 6
Guy's view: Couldn't reproduce his coolness from the spot in Chelsea's Champions League final shoot-out. Abate, Maggio & Diamanti a real problem down the Italy right - & needed more help.
JAMES MILNER (RIGHT MIDFIELD) - 5
Guy's view: Energetic and willing - undoubtedly a coach's dream to have in the squad but a wide player at this level surely has to provide more of a threat in the opposition half.
STEVEN GERRARD (CENTRE MIDFIELD) - 6
Guy's view: Didn't get the driving performance we've seen from the captain in the previous three games. Hampered by injury in the second half and extra-time. Led by example when it came to the penalty lottery.
SCOTT PARKER (CENTRE MIDFIELD) - 6
Guy's view: Did what he had to do in nicking in to break up so many Italy attacks. Lasting the course has been an issue at the tournament and he looked all in again when substituted.
ASHLEY YOUNG (LEFT MIDFIELD) - 4
Guy's view: Sadly not a Euros to remember after looking a candidate to be England's best player with his goals going into it. Confidence looked shot and his penalty summed it up.
DANNY WELBECK (FORWARD) - 5
Guy's view: Linked up well with Rooney for a shot on Buffon's goal in the first half but fired wide. That was about it. Still a really exciting prospect who just needs to add more goals to his game.
WAYNE ROONEY (FORWARD) - 5
Guy's view: Under huge pressure to deliver in the last two games and it seemed to tell. There will be many more caps and goals for him but there's an increasing demand for him to do it at a major tournament.
ANDY CARROLL (FORWARD) 60 MINS (for DANNY WELBECK) - 6
Guy's view: Used his size well enough after coming on with England trying to play everything up to him. Would have liked to have seen him have the chance to smash in a penalty.
THEO WALCOTT (RIGHT MIDFIELD) 60 MINS (for JAMES MILNER)- 5
Guy's view: Couldn't get into the game. Not his fault with England constantly on the back foot and chasing the ball.
Player who did not merit a rating...
JORDAN HENDERSON (MIDFIELD) 94 MINS (for SCOTT PARKER) - N/A
Guy's view: Not on long enough to assess really. Struggling to think of more than one touch of the ball.
