Wales sensitive to Aaron Ramsey 'issues' over Ryan Shawcross call

Aaron Ramsey will be consulted on whether Ryan Shawcross should be invited to represent Wales.

Ramsey's leg was broken in six places in 2010 after a tackle by Shawcross and Wales manager Chris Coleman admits his captain could be reluctant to play alongside the Stoke City defender.

"There are issues there. I'm not going to shy away from that," said Coleman.

Shawcross, born in Chester, qualifies for Wales having spent five years of compulsory education in the country.

That ruling, introduced by Fifa in 2009, has led to England-born midfielder Andy Dorman winning three caps for Wales.

Shawcross, who like Dorman was raised in north east Wales, stated in 2011 he had no intention of playing for Wales, preferring instead to attempt to make his way into the England squad.

The 24-year-old centre back has failed to do so, and Coleman is now contemplating another approach.

Ramsey ignored Shawcross's initial attempts at an apology in the immediate aftermath of the tackle that caused six fractures in his tibia and fibula.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger described the Shawcross challenge as "horrendous and unacceptable" and there has been significant tension between the Gunners and Stoke since.

Coleman is also keen to recruit Swansea City right-back Angel Rangel and Cardiff City defender Ben Turner to his squad before the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in September.

Rangel, born in Spain, qualifies on residency grounds having lived in Wales for five years. The 29-year-old has said he would consider representing his adopted country.

Turner, eligible through his Welsh grandparents, impressed Coleman in keeping Luis Suarez quiet in the Carling Cup final against Liverpool.

"Ryan Shawcross, Ben Turner, Angel Rangel - these are good players and players that could possibly strengthen us," said Coleman.

"But if I was going to go down that road, the first person I would speak to, especially in terms of Ryan, would be Aaron.

"I'd have that conversation with Aaron first and foremost because there are issues there.

"I'm not going to shy away from that. But can we improve Wales?"

    Ramsey should accept Ryan Shawcross into the Wales team. The tackle was not malicious and I personally think Arsene Wenger over-reacted, but that's football, when you go the pitch you must know the dangers. The fans should not of reacted so negatively either,

    I remember the tackle. It was a crunching 50-50 ball in which Ramsey came off worse. But I'm convinced it wasn't intentional. Shawcross was visibly upset. What I didn't like was the reason for Ryan's sending off. The referee took too long. He reacted to the injury, rather than the tackle. Apparently Ryan still gets booed by Arsenal fans, which is shameful. No intent to injure = no crime committed.

    What a strange thing to say in public. I'd imagine it pretty much guarantees that Shawcross won't ever be playing for Wales.

    Ryan Shawcross is not that sort of player. The 'tackle' was accidental and you could see Shawcross' horror at the time. He is unlikely to get into the England Squad, so I hope that he does get to play for Wales. Gary Speed wanted him, and I hope that Ramsey does too.

    what a load of rubbish, Shawcross is not a rough player. It was a 50/50 challenge that could have happened to anyone. Accidents happen. Why should Ramsey have any issues with Shawcross, he apologised and that was that. No need to ask for 'permission'

    So, whether Shawcross can achieve what every player must want to achieve is on the whim of another player? Coleman is being weak here. Pick your team on your professional judgement alone surely?

    This is an opportunity for Ramsey to move forward. Both Arsenal and Ramsey were completely out of order for refusing to accept an apology from firstly Ryan Shawcross and, secondly Stoke City football club. It is also a time for Arsenal supporters to move forward rather than continously vilify Ryan Shawcross for a football accident.

    Duffers- Same old rubbish about Jeffers. Shawcross did not break Jeffers' leg. Jeffers actually had ligament damage to his ankle and was out for 2 months.

    Im a Spurs fan and I dont like the "Stoke Bashing" that goes on in places like this. Notoriously difficult place to go to, particularly for those who like to play a so called prettier brand of football, amazing fans.
    You dont stay in the premiership for 4 years and counting without being able to play a bit either!

    afcftw - 5 not 6- of course you can break your leg that badly from a 50/50 tackle! It was 50/50 but Ramsey nipped it away just as Shawcross got there, mainly due to Bendtner pulling him back slightly. It's madness that this has been brought up yet again.

    Shawcross is too good for Wales and he knows it. He'd be a fine replacement for Terry when he's gone but the blind don't see it!
    As for the Tackle, if you watch the actual footage of the televised game then you'll see Ramsey flies in extremely fast giving Shawcross(who had the ball) no chance to react. Ramsey injured himself basically!

    Koolski "I am still to see any apology from Shawcross since the incident" because the apology wasn't made through the media. Unlike Arsenal SCFC seem to beable to have a bit of dignity.

    The tackle was unfortunate and an accident, it was Shawcross' first ever red card, i think everyone just needs to move on.

    When was Ramsey appointed player manager. If Coleman hasn't the balls to pick the squad he should get out.

    Can't see Shawcross wanting to play for Wales if this is how they decide their squad.

    I never understood the "uproar" about the tackle. Full bloodied, and unfortunate, certainly never a red card. If you take away tackles like that you take away the art of tackling itslef.
    If Ramsey has a problem, he needs to see the video again.
    I wouldnt sue Cooks if I burnt my finger striking a match.

    It's a pity Coleman couldn't have avoided this by simply calling Ramsay and asking him his opinion rather than conducting this charade via the media.

    This "grabbing players who aren't Welsh" malarkey makes me rather sad. It can't do much for the morale of true Welsh footballers.

    nicknack1 - it may suprise you to learn that some people do not support a team based on how they currently play. i've seen many different managers and different styles but i support my local team. I pity a man who will never know what support is actually about and will never experience an atmosphere.

    afcftw - 5 not 6- nobody want's to see players hurt, but accidents happen, and can be for and against any team in the land. So because Shawcross has got it wrong once or twice he gets slated but you admit these other players who make "beautiful" tackles also get it wrong at times! What about the thousands of tackles Shawcross has made when he cleanly took the ball?

    theenforcer22- It wasn't reckless it was 50/50! Also Shawcross was pulled back by Bendtner just as he was about to go for the ball which changed the momentum of his challenge.
