Cambridge United have signed striker Sam Smith from Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Lincoln for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old has agreed a 12-month contract at the Abbey Stadium, with an option for a further 12 months.

Cambridge manager Jez George said: "Sam is a player that we identified during the first few months of last season.

"He is young, quick, strong, intelligent and has the ability to score goals, we have needed to be patient in securing this deal."

Smith began his career with the now defunct Rushden & Diamonds and moved to Lincoln in July last year.

He scored seven goals for the Imps last season but was out for almost three months after breaking a bone in his foot.

Now fully fit again, Smith said he was 'really excited' about the move and insisted he was not just a target man.

"I like to think there's more to me than that. I've got a bit of pace about me as well as being a big lad," he said.
