Italy v England: Manchester City's Mario Balotelli ruled out

Manchester City and Italy striker Mario Balotelli

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has withdrawn from the Italy squad for Wednesday's friendly with England in Switzerland because of conjunctivitis.

The eye infection forced the 22-year-old out of City's Community Shield win against Chelsea on Sunday.

No Juventus or Napoli players have been named because of their involvement in Sunday's Supercoppa match in Beijing.

Coach Cesare Prandelli has selected eight uncapped players, including AC Milan's Stephan El Shaarawy.

Prandelli, 54, has also opted to give some of his regulars a rest following Italy's Euro 2012 campaign, where they lost 4-0 in the final to Spain, with the 22-man squad featuring four Atalanta players.

Atalanta returned to Serie A last season and striker Manolo Gabbiadini, defender Federico Peluso and goalkeeper Andrea Consigli are all named in the squad for the first time.

The elevation of defenders Mattia De Sciglio and Francesco Acerbi to the senior side means there will be five AC Milan players on duty in Berne.

The other newcomers are Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin and Sampdoria midfielder Andrea Poli, who spent last season on loan with Inter Milan.
