Truro City boss Lee Hodges was upbeat despite his side's opening day 2-1 defeat at Billericay Town in the Blue Square Bet South.
Chris Wild gave the home side a 27th minute lead, but his own goal drew the sides level just after half-time.
But a last-minute goal from Sam Lechmere sealed the win for Billericay.
"I thought they were outstanding when you look at what's happened pre-season and to come here with just 13 players," Hodges told BBC Radio Cornwall.
"Defending has cost us in the end and that's frustrating really because the boys have worked their socks off in blistering heat."
City went to the match with a depleted squad after a summer of financial problems off the field, and Hodges says with that in mind he could not have asked for anything more from his side.
He added: "I think we're still two or three weeks behind everyone else in our league and I felt we dominated the game other than their two goals."
