Britt Assombalonga scored twice as Southend picked up their third home win in seven days at the expense of 10-man Dangenham and Redbridge.
Luke Wilkinson saw red early on for a foul on Gavin Tomlin, and Assombalonga made it an uphill struggle for the visitors when he nodded in for 1-0.
And he bundled in a second after Kevan Hurst's low shot was parried.
Dwight Gayle's cross somehow evaded Paul Smith in the home goal, but Ryan Creswell's volley sealed the points.
VIEWS FROM DRESSING ROOM
Southend manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"Going down to 10 men sometimes is like playing 12 men. It proved that in the second half when we got sloppy and lazy.
"We've created an awful lot of chances and not taken them today again, which will cost us dear in the future.
"But we are creating chances which is pleasing, and getting the result is the most important thing.
"I'm quite pleased for Britt Assomabalonga he's worked hard since he's got here."
