Oxford United had the better chances but were held to an uninspiring goalless draw with Torquay.
Billy Bodin was denied by U's keeper Ryan Clarke late in the first half.
But after the break, Oxford should have scored with visiting goalkeeper Martin Rice denying Peter Leven twice and James Constable, who also blazed another shot over the bar.
Andy Whing went closest to a winner but his header hit the post to leave Oxford 17th in the League Two table.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM:
Torquay United manager Martin Ling told BBC Radio Devon:
"It certainly wasn't pretty, we were on the back foot for a lot of the game.
"There were players out there that put their bodies on the line. I thought the two centre-halves were outstanding and I thought Martin Rice had a superb league debut.
"We got away with a point. We didn't create much at all and we looked a little bit toothless without Rene Howe.
"But everyone can be proud of their efforts and workrate today."
