Crawley: Mark Connolly enjoys leadership role

Crawley defender Mark Connolly says he enjoyed leading the back four in the Reds' 3-0 win against Colchester, with Claude Davis out injured.

The 21-year-old, who scored his first professional goal in the game, was the senior centre-back alongside 20-year-old Joe Walsh.

"I'm still only 21 and I'm learning every game, but I like being a leader," Connolly told BBC Sussex.

"When I was at Wolves with Mick McCarthy he always saw me as a leader."

Connolly moved to Crawley on a free transfer in the summer from Bolton, who had spent £1 million to sign the defender from Wolves in 2009.

And despite his age, Connolly says he enjoys the added responsibility of leading the defence.

"I want to pass on whatever knowledge I have," he added.

"I'm getting more experience with every game, more confidence. I feel good at the moment and I'm enjoying it."
