Michael Appleton: Blackpool reject Blackburn approach

Blackpool have rejected an approach from Blackburn for permission to speak to their manager Michael Appleton.

Rovers made the move on Wednesday night after sacking

Appleton, 37, only joined Blackpool from Portsmouth

He has been in charge of the Seasiders for 12 matches, winning two and drawing eight.

Berg won one game in 10 at Blackburn, but the club have won three in a row under caretaker Gary Bowyer.

Rovers are in 13th place in the Championship, five points short of the play-off places and one point above Blackpool.

Blackpool's last win came against Blackburn on 15 December and the two sides are one place apart in the Championship table.

Last week, Rovers global advisor Shebby Singh told BBC Radio Lancashire that the club wanted their next manager

Singh said: "If somebody has got the ambition, the knowledge and the experience, there will be people who will take the job.

"We are looking to offer a short-term contract with specific targets, and upon achieving those targets it will trigger a longer-term contract."

    Blackburn Rovers have turned themselves into an absolute laughing stock over the past year. No half decent manager is going to take that job.

    Is it still Jack Straw's constituency? He could do it and claim it on his expenses.
    But seriously, this once well respected club is rapidly becoming an embarrassment and it's becoming blatantly obvious even to non followers of football where the fault lies.
    I'm sure genuine followers of football (non Blackburn supporters) empathise with its fans, I certainly do.

    As a Blackburn fan, I'm glad we've been turned down by Blackpool. The club needs stability, so rather than try and get a manager who's only been at his own club for two months, Venkys should give Gary Bowyer a chance. Let him bring in some backroom staff and let him buy his own players. Either that or try and get an established manager with a proven track record who can stablize the club.

    Shebby Singh and the Venky's are an embarrassment Blackburn Rovers, and in my opinion this just adds to that. For a manager to move on after just 2 months in a job shouldn't happen and would only be unsettled if he did move.

    I am a Chelsea supporter so I have much empathy for all Blackburn Rovers fans. It's sad to see one of English footballs oldest clubs being made to look like a laughing stock.

    Baggies fan in peace...feel desperately sorry for all Rovers fans, and wouldn't wish this situation upon any club but Wolves. I generally wear rose-tinted glasses, but really can't see how this situation is going to improve for BRFC. One farce after another....

    he conspired with them to get big sam fired
    his results were awful
    he was unqualified and incompitent
    as mentioned below, he was using rovers to feather his own cap

    we did try to buy the club

    To all the people who keep saying we should have kept Steve Keane:

    1) Worst record of any Blackburn manager, ever (until Berg, but ten games is not long enough, in my opinion, to judge a manager.)

    2) He was a proven liar and a willing mouthpiece for clueless owners.

    3) How many manager positions have been vacant since he resigned? Yet you never hear his name touted for any other club do you?

    A Portsmouth fan here, would the FA & Football League pass their own fit and proper test. You only have to look at who they approved as fit and proper to own and run Portsmouth. Just look at our mess now. No, they are not fit and proper, they need to stand back and take a long look at themselves.

    Based on the comments on here, the owners have clearly brought the game into disrepute. Approaching a newly appointed manager without the permission of the club is disreputable in itself, never mind what has already taken place! Could the FA get involved at this stage ?

    Feel so sorry for Blackburn fans, your club has incompetent owners and management team in place,
    @Mike and Kean defenders, remember what kind of man he is. Stabbed Allardyce in the back to secure the mangers job, took them from mid table premier league to relegation fodder and talked total rubbish while using his influece to secure a long contract for himself. Not a good man or innocent party

    India does not really have a reputation for knowing much about football. I don't get why they are running a football club. When they sacked Allardyce and appointed a nobody, it was obvious to anyone that Blackburn were then going to hurtle downwards. This is what's happening now. Unbelievable.

    West Brom fan here, and can really emapthise with the fans. Before the Indian invasion, BRFC was a well run and stable club, quite similar to WBA in many aspects. Not a single one of these guys have a clue what they are doing and need to leave the club before doing any more damage.

    Just stick to the chicken Venky's, you are clearly incompetent concerning anything else.

    It just shows to what desperate lengths Blackburn are going to find a manager. Anyone with any sense would steer well clear of a club with owners who think they are playing Fantasy Football. It would be best to wait in the wings until Venky's have given up and departed for good. Not good for the fans in the short term but it's time for Managers to take a collective stance against such owners.

    Feel so sorry for the Blackburn fans having to endure this farce, as it's not even as if there was success at a price i.e. Portsmouth. Best outcome Venky's have to sell at an epic loss, getting exactly what they deserve and someone halfway competent takes over

    Don't support either team, but why would Appleton quit Blackpool - who he has only just signed a contract at - to go to Blackburn - whose advisor said will only be appointing on a short term basis, and whose reputation is rock bottom?

    And why if they've had weeks to think of a candidate have they thought of Appleton, when earlier in the season they didn't think of him as an ideal candidate?
