Gateshead's hopes of survival were dealt a blow as they went down at promotion-chasing Forest Green.
Magno Vieira netted the winner when he hooked home his first League goal since September from close range.
Yan Klukowski had failed to put Rovers in front in the third minute when his penalty was saved by Adam Bartlett following handball by Liam Hatch.
Home keeper Sam Russell saved Josh Gillies's late shot on the line while Gateshead's James Brown hit the post.
Gateshead are now level on points with 21st-placed Nuneaton, who scored twice in the last two minutes to beat Barrow.

Forest Green Rovers manager Dave Hockaday told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"After 10 minutes we should've been 4-0 up. However we missed a penalty and then you're thinking this isn't going to be our day.
"They made it difficult for us but it's three points, clean sheet and we move on.
"We did more than enough to win the game; we've just got to keep a calm head and just keep plugging away.
"We've found a way to win this game and given with the resources that we had available, I've got to be happy."
