Sean Marks' late header gave Braintree their third win in a row and consigned Gateshead to their fifth defeat in six.
The Iron opened the scoring when Dean Wells volleyed home Luke Daley's free-kick from close range.
In a frantic end to the game Gateshead drew level through Ben Everson's first goal for the club as he finished neatly from Jamie Chandler's centre.
The visitors were not to be denied though and a minute later Marks' close-range header sealed the points.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Braintree manager Alan Devonshire told BBC Essex:
"I'm delighted for the boys, I felt we could have gone in (at half-time) a bit more than one up, we were quite comfortable.
"Second half they put us under a lot of pressure. They've scored, but we've showed a lot of character and got the winner straight back.
"Three wins in the bounce, from three difficult games, is fantastic. It was important that we came here and got a result after the last two games.
"If you'd have said to me three games ago we would win three on the bounce, I wouldn't have believed you."
