David Beckham's Paris St-Germain full debut ends in victory

Former England captain David Beckham won on his full debut for Paris St-Germain as his new club overcame Marseille 2-0 in the French Cup.

The 37-year-old midfielder was deployed in a deep-lying central role, but was overshadowed by Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who scored both goals.

Ibrahimovic's low shot squirmed through Steve Mandanda's grasp for the first before the Swede scored a penalty.

Marseille, with Joey Barton in midfield, rarely threatened the hosts.

PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti said of Beckham: "He made a very good performance.

"He made good passes as usual, he was well positioned on the pitch alongside Blaise Matuidi. He was very solid."

The two sides met on Sunday in the league in a game that ended in the same scoreline, Beckham coming off the bench to set up the second for Ibrahimovic.

But on Wednesday Beckham struggled to make such a telling impression on a fractured and, at times fractious, match at the Parc des Princes.

A foul on the former Manchester United and Real Madrid man by Alaixys Romao sparked a bout of pushing and shoving between a group of players, before Beckham himself was booked in the second half for his reaction to a tackle from Jordan Ayew.

But it was former AC Milan and Barcelona striker Ibrahimovic who was the main focus of attention, albeit initially for the wrong reasons.

The Swede wasted a clear opening as he slashed at thin air from Kevin Gameiro's precise pass, but was then at his bullish best to score the opener.

After racing onto Clement Chantome's long pass, he battled past Lucas Mendes before unleashing a strong shot that proved too powerful for Mandanda.

Following cross words with Barton after a coming-together at the end of the first half, Ibrahimovic then won and converted a penalty after Jeremy Morel's needless foul.

A pair of wayward efforts from Andre-Pierre Gignac was the sum total of the threat from a Marseille side who looked some way short of challenging the league leaders.
