Luton and Hereford were locked together on 50 points after David Martin's late goal secured a draw for the Hatters.
Alex Lawless shot wide for the home side before Marlon Jackson surged forward and finished well to put the Bulls in front.
Scott Rendell was denied a leveller on the stroke of half-time by the feet of keeper James Bittner.
Jonathan Smith struck the Hereford bar before Martin's 18-yard effort found the net three minutes from time.

Luton Town manager John Still told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"I'm just getting them to go out and try and play the way I'd like them to play.
"We gave the fans something to get behind and they got behind us.
"Alex Wall is going to be a decent player for us, he really is.
"Three games in charge and I've not been beaten yet, that's good isn't it?"
