Ross County rebuff Aberdeen's approach for Derek Adams

Ross County boss Derek Adams

Ross County have rejected an approach by Aberdeen to speak to Derek Adams about their managerial vacancy.

The Dons have begun the search for Craig Brown's successor, with the 72-year-old retiring from management in the summer.

County chairman Roy McGregor told BBC Scotland they had rejected Aberdeen's approach.

Aberdeen have drawn up a list of about 12 candidates to take up the managerial reins at Pittodrie.

Adams has impressed in County's debut season in the SPL, guiding the Highland outfit to fourth place in the table.

Responding to Aberdeen's interest, McGregor told BBC Scotland "it's dead" and would not welcome any further approach.

Earlier this month, the County chairman said they were keen to extend Adams's contract.

"I'm 99% sure that he'll be here next season. He's got another year on his contract and has an extension on the table," the chairman said at the time.

"It'll be down to whether Ross County are as ambitious as he is and that the board here are willing to back him in what he's trying to do with the club. I'm sure they will."

Brown, who will take up a seat on the Aberdeen board as a non-executive director in the summer, will have a say in appointing his successor.

    It does not matter who is the manager, it is the shambolic player attitude to the fans ALWAYS letting us down, they should stop going on about how they need to win, as a sports company giant says (Just Do It).

    Agree with Adams as over the past years/decades Aberdeen players don't seem incapable of being fired up for anything......

    But how about looking at Owen Coyle?

    Fair enough. I wouldn't waste any more time trying to get him. He's a decent candidate but not that far above the rest that Aberdeen should get obsessed with getting him.
    I even anger myself in saying this but Craig Levein should be the next port of call. He's a good club manager.

    The comments about Levein and boring football are well off the mark. Dundee United played the most exciting football they had for about 15 years, and despite being tight and working hard, it was all about possession and attacking. He brought on the kids and found some young talent too, so he'd probably be an ideal fit for Aberdeen.
    Depends how desperate he is :)

    Da is not going to walk on what he is building at RC. Why would he? Just look at the SPL table - it tells the whole story. Aberdeen are not the club they were in the 70s and 80s, when they were capable of winning trophies. DA had a sniff at Hibs and probably realises now how well off he is at RC - supportive chairman, building not just the team but the club as a sustainable business.

    12 candidates!
    Levein, Eric Black, Hartley, Adams, Butcher, Shiels, Darren Fergsuon, Danny Lennon + 4 others i would assume

    Black would be my choice, 2 reasons -1.Not much managerial experience which can be a good thing sometimes and 2. ex legend which can be a bad thing.
    Black or Hartley for me

    Wow 12 candidates, don't they know who they want?

    The 12 apostles to replace to replace old timer Broon should be: Adams, Baxter, Black, Butcher, Ferguson, Hartley, Hughes, Lennon, Levein, McCall, Pressley and Sheils.

    I'd go for an outside candidate, big Sandy fae Auchterless.

    Just goes to show how far he has come, DA is a great manager, and will move on to great things, but I am sure Ross County will keep him for a long while yet...

    July at least). It will also provide the basis for a final decision on where to play.

    Get it wrong.....attendances will slide even further and the whole future of a once great team could be at risk..............

    @19 Yes you bought your way up the league are you seriously trying to say that County would have got there had RM not funded the journey?

    Not to say that Aberdeen are a particuarly big club these days however they are bigger than RCFC and if Adam's can't cut it as an assistant manager with a big SPL side what chance has he got as a manager?

    @23 As an Aberdonian in Aberdeen I've rarely heard a don say that RC would go down this season, I think you're telling fibs! I think all fans thought Dundee would be relegated after the Hibees sorted their house out.

    RCFC have security and structure in their favour. Dons have the largest budget outside Celtic but need rebuilt from grass routes right through. Until that happens, AFC going nowhere.

    @16 - Ross County have bought their way through the leagues?? Done it slowly in that case. They also have a good loyal support base and stable ownership so dont compare to Livi or worse, Gretna.

    Also correct you if you're wrong - alright then I will, no he hasn't "tried his hand" he was assistant at Hibs but has only ever managed Ross County.

    DA would be mad to move to Pittodrie and a squad of perennial under performers many of whom are well over the hill and tied to the club for another year.Milne is not likely to loosen the purse strings so further mediocrity can be expected.Best stay at Ross County rather than sacrifice what you have for a short stopover in Aberdeen.
