QPR defender Chris Samba tells fans to 'get over' his wages

QPR defender Chris Samba has told fans to "get over" the issue of his wages after apologising for his error-strewn display in the damaging loss to Fulham.

Samba, 29, conceded a penalty from which Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring, then lost the ball to the Bulgarian striker, who made it 2-0.

"Fed up with the money tweets, get over it," tweeted the player,external-link who is reported to be on £100,000 a week.

"I am sorry I let the side down, really upset with my first-half performance."

The Republic of Congo international added: "Tell me what is a £100k performance? See everyone talking about mistakes, like footballers cannot have an off day on the pitch. We are human like all of you. Grow up some of you, please."

The former Blackburn centre-back also wrote, and then deleted, a swear word-filled tweet to a follower he felt was racially abusing him.

He later said on the social media tool that he did not deserve to receive that type of abuse "for a game of football."external-link

The Congo international also offered his Twitter followers a chance to win two tickets for a future Rangers game, followed by a meeting with the defender and entry to the QPR players' lounge, "as a sorry for yesterday's game".

Samba signed a four-and-a-half-year deal in January, when he joined QPR from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for a club record fee of £12.5m.

But despite the large outlay in the winter transfer window on Samba and a number of other expensive additions, results have not improved and QPR remain second from bottom in the Premier League table after the 3-2 defeat at Craven Cottage on Monday.

Manager Harry Redknapp was furious with his players after they gifted the hosts a 3-0 lead as they suffered a loss that leaves them seven points adrift of Premier League safety with seven games left.

"We gave away the most terrible goals I've ever seen since I've been managing a football team," the 66-year-old said.

"A penalty, losing the ball and an own goal. Scandalous goals. It was an absolute disaster."

A Clint Hill own goal followed Samba's mistakes and, although QPR hit back through Adel Taarabt and Loic Remy, the damage had been done.

"We got a goal back and came back in the second half and absolutely murdered them," added Redknapp. "When it went to 3-2 I could only see one winner, I wouldn't have even taken a draw at that point.

"But I was disappointed with the last 10 minutes. Christopher Samba put himself up front and then we started launching balls up and that is not how we play."

QPR face fellow strugglers Wigan on Sunday, a game Redknapp admits they must win to stand any hope of survival.

"We are not giving up," he said. "We have to beat Wigan on Sunday, that is where we are at now. We need another 14 points from the remaining games and we have to try to do that.

"We have to win four and draw two but it is getting harder."

    Until I was laid off last month, I worked between 45-60 hours a week, 13 days a fortnight, for less than £14,000 a year as a professionally trained carer.

    This is why it's galling, Chris Samba.

    Perhaps people should aim their anger at the people who reportedly agreed to pay Samba £100k per week, which is surely the real issue...

    I can't fathom all the fuss about wages. Players being overpaid is a fairly universal consensus, but this is something every fan is a party to so what do they expect. Club's now exist for the benefit of its employees, that's a fact.

    Who has the will power to NOT renew their season ticket, CANCEL their SKY subscription, go watch their local non-league outfit or refuse to buy new replica shirt?

    Sorry Chris, unlike the mercenaries at QPR, you obviously went there for footballing reasons to play in a relegation battle.
    Still your wages should help you get over it.

    Yet again, a player who doesn't seem to comprehend that he is being paid more in a week than the average fan earns in 5 YEARS. The sporting equivalent of the bankers that ruined our economy and then still demand bonuses. Superhuman wages for mediocre (at best) performance. Sickening.

    Sorry, I can't get over it. £100k per week is an obscene amount of money, whichever way you look at it. The domestic game has sold its soul.

    The fault lies with the Club for agreeing such a farcical package.
    41/2 years at £100k per week for a 29 year old player.
    No wonder QPR are in trouble.
    Tony Fernandez needs to get a grip.
    It looks like PL status is over so it!s time to offload some of the absurdly overpaid players and regroup.

    When you put this into context, the wages are absolutely sickening. What on earth were QPR thinking?
    Of course Samba is just milking the system, the current state of the PL is a joke. I have no problem with world class players being rewarded, but when you see below average mercenaries earning six figure salaries over 1 week, it sums up what a farce modern football has become.

    These sort of wages are obscene. Yes, top sports people deserve to be well paid but there is a limit to what is reasonable. Is this clot worth more than a top surgeon? Mind you, I'd love to be paid 100k per week - I could pay my house off next Thursday.

    Is Samba unaware that he could buy my house with less than 2 weeks of his wages? When hard working people who hardly ever make a mistake at their work get paid in 5 years what Samba earns in 1 week, that is when we get the right to complain about obscene wages of football players. Samba probably made more mistakes last night than normal people do at their work in 5 years too.

    @97 Agreed. I don't subscribe to Sky, and I stopped going to see my local team when they charged £40+ for championship football. That's when I realised what the game was becoming.

    100,000K a week is an obscene amount of money for any footballer, let alone a lumbering defender.

    We all know that paying footballers more money doesn't make them play better.

    It's all down to the current crazy market.

    Even so, Samba should be feeling embarrassed and guilty because, after all he still taking the money.

    Negotiate lesser wages and fans might be more forgiving.

    Twitter is for attention seeking prima donas, if you enagge in that then you must expect some flack especially from fans who probably have to work 3 or 4 years to get what players get a week who then pay inflated prices to watch them stroll around like they don't care.
    If there's one thing that upsets fans it's the lack of respect for the shirt - fans are loyal and passionate, players are greedy

    I can't get my head around it still; players, especially in England are paid obscene wages and when one gets wind of someone else getting a decent few bucks, they jump on the bandwagon of greed.

    Falling attendances and rising wages..makes sense doesn't it? Would it not be more ideal to have a low base wage and a performance related bonus? Not the one they have now but one after a serious overhaul

    It's the stupid fans and SKY subscriptiopn payers that are really to blame. I would like £100K a week and would gladly accept it, if it was offered, so don't blame the player, blame the idiots funding their wages.
