Women's Super League: Birmingham grab late Lincoln draw

Lincoln celebrate their goal

A late own goal from England captain Casey Stoney handed Birmingham a 1-1 draw against Lincoln in the Women's Super League.

England winger Jess Clarke gave the visitors a 63rd minute lead, but striker Kirsty Linnett's shot deflected off Stoney five minutes from time.

Lincoln controlled large spells, but Birmingham produced the better chances.

Defender Emily Westwood and striker Rachel Williams both wasted good openings carved out by the home team.

Midfielder Jade Moore was also unlucky for the Blues, her 25-yard drive flashing just over the bar seconds before the interval.

Lincoln broke the deadlock when Clarke scored from close range following a corner taken by striker Carla Cantrell.

She then wasted the opportunity to wrap up the victory when she sent a free header wide from ex-Birmingham striker Precious Hamilton's cross.

And Lincoln paid the price for that miss as Linnett met fellow substitute Melissa Lawley's cross, with the shot taking a deflection off Stoney.

After setting up the equaliser, however, Lawley squandered a simple chance to win the game when she shot wide from a great position in the last minute.

The result means that both Birmingham and Lincoln are yet to register their first win of the new WSL season.
