Newcastle full-back Ryan Taylor has flown to the United States in a bid to solve a knee problem that has kept him out of action since August 2012.

The 28-year-old's cruciate knee ligament will be operated on by renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado.

Steadman has performed surgery on ex-Magpies strikers Michael Owen and Alan Shearer in the past.

Taylor joined Newcastle from Wigan in 2009 and has made 91 appearances.

Liverpool-born Taylor, who can also play in midfield, has already had one operation, but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew recently confirmed there had been a setback in his recovery and he could miss the entirety of next season.

Taylor tweeted on Tuesday evening: "All ready for my long flight to Denver tomorrow.

"Loads asking am I going to see Dr Steadman? I sure am.

"I'm over to have my ACL repaired again. Then the recovery begins to get back."

Prior to Taylor, Dr Steadman's most recent Premier League patient was Fulham defender Zdenek Grygera.
