250.250 Unbelievable Tekkers Its all very well to go the elitist route if you happen to be one of those lucky few who are selected. Most have already been contracted to the big clubs in the first place. The problem is to widen the grass roots base to increase the volume coming through. Just how many slip through the net
"A lot of coaches I talk to tell me there is a lot of talent out there, but they can't get through," he said. ...Why do think that is then Greg?... could it be because they are not good enough? .... I thought Greg Dyke would be a breathe of fresh air at the FA, unfortunately it seems he has the same problem as the old guard.. 'seeing the wood for the trees'. Roll on to the next Chairman!

@281 Errr Barca are what they are largely due to Luis Van Gaal & then Rijkaard. Cruyff was a disciple of Michels. As for Spain, well they started from Euros 2008 and that was under coach Luis Aragones, Cruyff had zero involvment. Deary me, knowledge is incredilbly poor.
Problem is who is teaching the coaches? If today's English coaches have been taught the English Way then another 100 years of failure lie ahead.Barca are what they are because they allowed Cryuff to dictate style from his Ajax days and the results are there for all to see - Spain and BarcaUnfortunately the English coaches are more akin to Pulis when a Hoddle/Curry/Marsh/ is required
279. ESGCasillas is golden boy in Spanish football though, he will have to hand over the jersey to DDG before he takes over. Some of the Spanish U21 squad below, frightening potential.De GeaCarvajalMontoyaBartra Martinez MorenoThiago AlcântaraCamachoIscoKokeTelloMorenoVázquezMuniain
@277 Hmm Diego Lopez huh? Forgot about him. Realistically though, I can't see it being anyone but De Gea for that long?
Spain, France, Holland, & Germany all developed winning youth football formats built around developing ball skills and coaching talent. Our incompetent FA ignored this for decades and stuck to kick & rush school football. Now they wonder why foreign players are more popular. The only wonder is how more incompetent can our FA get? Depressingly "lots more" seems to be the only answer.
274. Small Heathen Big Villan I used to be a PE teacher before change in career & I know exactly what you mean. Some standards are shocking. A bag of balls, 4 cones, some bibs and away we go!276. ESGI'd have DDG 2nd choice personally but traditionally it has been Casillas, Valdes, Reina & Diego Lopez. Forster is good but in a shocking league. He needs games in a better league.
@275 Well Forster's been ok @Celtic, & ppl rate Ruddy (not me). But yeah I'd say De Gea's behind casillas, but can see him getting ahead of Valdes & Reina. Can't say I rate Valdes that much. Who'd be no.4 then? DDG has a chance 2 prove himself in U-21s this summer. @274 Lol that about typifies it.
272. ESGHype definitely. Bale needs to prove himself in Europe before being compared to the likes of CR7 & Messi. He needs a few seasons abroad & a CL under his belt, then we can compare.Hart is the best & only good keeper we have. Stats prove that De Gea has been consistently better this season & he is arguably Spain 4th choice keeper (maybe 5th). Small indication of how far behind we are.
My lads get brilliant coaching at the local leisure centre where they are taught to think, to look, to play football. At one game they played for their school the teacher told them 'I don't want to see you playing the ball out of defence lad, I want you to put it into orbit!'. The FA could start by working with schools to get all PE teachers their coaching badges.
Were the FA weak in caving into the demands of the greedy clubs who wanted to form the PL? Could they not have stood their ground and insisted Murdoch deal with them as the parent body, or the clubs resign? Note the PL have had to stay inside the FA to qualify for Euro competitions. The FA may have been afraid of a breakaway, but there would have been no Europe for the PL if that had happened.
@270 "We even had someone on here claiming Cleverley was England's answer to Messi!" - Well that's silly, he's more of a carbon copy of Iniesta in style rather than messi. @269 I think it's more 2 do w/hype & overhype. Like Bale is now on the same scale as CR7 & Messi. What planet is this??! Joe Hart as best GK in world? Y did Casillas, Neuer, Buffon, De Gea etc all retire?
270. jb194 The hype is far too much I agree. This 'pop culture' where footballers are seen as celebrities really winds me up. Solution to England's problems? Does the PL need to change?
