Leeds United have signed Oldham striker Matt Smith on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old, who scored in the FA Cup against Liverpool and Everton last season, was a free agent after turning down a new contract with the Latics.

He scored 14 goals in 75 games for the League One club after joining them from Solihull Moors in May 2011.

The University of Manchester graduate is Leeds boss Brian McDermott's first signing since taking over at Elland Road in April.

McDermott told BBC Radio Leeds: "He's a player that I've known for a while and I like his background. He's come a long way in a short period of time.

"I think he'll give us something different. I saw him against Liverpool and Everton and he caused them both real problems.

"We feel we've signed a player with potential who is ready to play in this league now. We're delighted he's chosen us."

Smith tweeted: "Absolutely delighted to sign for Leeds United. Very proud moment for me and really looking forward this new challenge and chapter in my life!"
