Matt Ritchie: Bournemouth-Portsmouth cup tie 'unbelievable'

Matt Ritchie

Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie has called being drawn against Portsmouth in the League Cup "unbelievable".

Ritchie, 23, began his career at Portsmouth and grew up in the area and was delighted to have drawn Bournemouth's south-coast neighbours.

"It's unbelievable," Ritchie told BBC Radio Solent. "Obviously I'm excited being a Pompey fan and growing up in the area.

"It's a great draw for me personally but also the club."

Bournemouth were promoted to the Championship last season while Pompey were relegated to League Two and Ritchie is expecting a cracking atmosphere at the Goldsands Stadium with the game due to be played the week commencing 5 August.

"When we played them in the league last season it was a great atmosphere and I'm sure it will be again," added Ritchie, who was named League One Player of the Year.

"Hopefully we can put on a display and people will want to come back so it's a great opportunity for everyone.

"Guy's (Whittingham - Pompey manager) done a really good job and brought in a few new players so they'll be a good outfit this year. It's a derby so it'll be a tough test but I'm sure if we're at the races we'll be fine."

Whittingham himself is relishing the tie and says it is a game Pompey's fans can look forward to,.

"It's a good one, but we've got them three weeks earlier in a pre-season friendly also," said Whittingham.

"It's a good one for supporters and is something for the fans to look forward to.

"Our team will be dramatically different because of the situation we were in. It's one of those competitions you want to go as far as you can in but I think first and foremost we have to concentrate on the league campaign and get off to as best a start we can."
