Birmingham City midfielder Jonathan Spector will visit a specialist to determine whether he needs surgery on his fractured right cheekbone.
Spector, who recently signed a new two-year contract, suffered the injury when colliding with an opponent's knee in a pre-season friendly against MK Dons.
The 27-year-old now faces a scan to see whether he will miss the start of the new Championship season.
"It was absolutely ridiculous," boss Lee Clark told the club website.
"It was so innocuous, it was 10 seconds from the end of the game as well, which is the frustrating thing."
