Birmingham City midfielder Jonathan Spector will have surgery on his fractured cheekbone and could be out for up to six weeks.
Spector, who recently signed a new two-year contract, suffered the injury when colliding with an opponent's knee in a pre-season friendly against MK Dons.
And following a scan, the 27-year-old will miss the start of the new season.
"It was absolutely ridiculous," boss Lee Clark told the club site prior to finding out the extent of the injury.
"It was so innocuous, it was 10 seconds from the end of the game as well, which is the frustrating thing."
